Enough talk. Europe's AI plan is getting real.

Six new AI Factories 🇨🇿 🇱🇹 🇳🇱 🇷🇴 🇪🇸 🇵🇱 and 13 new local Antennas across Europe 🇧🇪 🇨🇾 🇭🇺 🇮🇪 🇱🇻 🇲🇹 🇸🇰 🇮🇸 🇲🇩 🇨🇭 🇬🇧 🇲🇰 🇷🇸 have just launched.

What's the deal? 👇

✅ Businesses get massive computing power for faster, smarter AI.

✅ Citizens get better public services, from healthcare to security.

✅ We all get trustworthy, human-centric AI.

The foundation is laid. Time to build the future.

Just to be clear all of this is a big bubble ready to implode. I worked in a "AI" company and all LLM product I have tried is a big joke and sometimes very dangerous. If you want to short on AI company I think it's now.
Als Antwort auf European Commission

Can't we move away from AI instead of doubling down on it? It's not energy efficient, it's not helping to fight climate change because of that. It's not helping the battle against fake news and manipulation. It's not helping to save democracy and thus it's not helping humanity/mankind. I'm already tired of any form of AI they're trying to implement in about everything these days. Stop it, really. We don't need this.
Als Antwort auf European Commission

I must say, I am cautiously optimistic about the EU plans on that topic.

While the current hype-cycle and investment bubble mostly focus on the economically unsustainable LLM business, this plan is about providing access to processing power - which is neutral, and can be used for all kinds of applications. This includes actually useful and economically reasonable AI applications, but also non-AI computations that are suited for GPUs.

Als Antwort auf European Commission

you should be ashamed of wasting our resources like that while we - literally -pay the bill for it. But posting this embarrassment on a staunchly anti LLM platform like the fediverse shows a special form of absolute tone deafness
Als Antwort auf European Commission

and massive consuming power, do I hear Germany crying about their need for Russian gas to power some powerplants? Where would they get some several gigawatts more?!
Als Antwort auf European Commission

Great to see you’ve committed to wasting masses of energy on this, I hate the environment too! 🌍😒
Als Antwort auf Celeste Ryder 🐾 🐀🏳️‍🌈

Hi @bougiewonderland! Thank you for raising this! Our AI Act does address environmental protection and sustainability, for example by requiring AI models to disclose how much energy they consume. Innovation in Europe must go hand in hand with environmental responsibility. You can read more here: link.europa.eu/kfm4Yd
Als Antwort auf European Commission

Disclosing how much they consume doesn’t achieve anything when the amount of resources consumed is the issue, not transparency per se.
Als Antwort auf European Commission

could you rather focus on fighting climate crisis and energy transition/independence for instance?

interesting claims. Can you point to the sources you used? Also, are these data centers going to be powered by fossil, nuclear or renewables?

Hi @alexmu! Thank you for your question! An AI Factory is basically a hub or ecosystem where people, computers, and data come together to develop and train artificial intelligence models and applications.
Als Antwort auf European Commission

@alexmu Good to see you down here. Could you also answer the question of how these factories will be powered?
Als Antwort auf European Commission

@alexmu It is not a "factory", but a data center with extremely expensive nvidia GPUs inside 💰. This name was popularized by CEO of that company, to more easily fool the public and politicians, and transfer more EU money to them...
Als Antwort auf European Commission

thanks for that. Now, factories produce items, e.g., cars, furniture. What does an AI factory produce? And since the factories are financed from EU funds, how do the products of the factory benefit the citizens of EU member countries?
Als Antwort auf European Commission

wouldn't it be beneficial for this endeavour to share purpose and realization efforts?

Just pouring money into it and some bragging? It sows doubt in your policy making, I'm afraid.

"Businesses get massive computing power for faster, smarter AI". Companies rack computing power, citizens pay the bill.
"Citizens get better public services, from healthcare to security". Citizens get bigger figures of unemployment, more workers under the threshold of poverty, and smaller salary for same positions.
"We all get trustworthy, human-centric AI". That's an oxymoron, AI brings machine-centric humans. The "I" in "AI" stands for 'Intelligence", & there is our humanity.

Name one public service that has ever been made better with AI.
Also, name one person that has ever described AI as “trustworthy”.
I won’t even bother with the “human-centric” bs.
Als Antwort auf European Commission

How exactly will those datacenters be powered, and cooled? Unless it’s 100% renewable energy sources, and they don’t need fresh water this just exasperates the climate catastrophe, and water shortages. Additionally, the LLM hype is a bubble caused by FOMO. On top of that, _all_ providers of genAI models implicitly admitted they can’t train models without massive copyright violations, because licensing everything they train on is prohibitively expensive.
Als Antwort auf European Commission

AI is mostly scam. Maybe not participating in AI contest may save us, at all?

We should not pay AI companies bill from our taxes. Let them bankrupt. Let's decentralize European internet, instead...

Als Antwort auf European Commission

Will these factories pay their own electricity bills or will it be exactly the same as in US - bills double or even tripple for the avarage consumers?
Als Antwort auf European Commission

Just point that to business models and solutions useful for EU citizens, but save us from LLM slop, mass surveillance, wasted energy and unnecessary water consumption.

This could be spent on so many other, actually useful, things.

The only good thing about this proposal is that it's European and therefore has a chance that the data doesn't get leaked to regions with worse data protection than the EU.

But "AI" is a scam. It provides nothing other than being the latest gold rush. It's the exact same hype as blockchains and NFTs and all it achieved is the destruction of knowledge, culture and reality.

Als Antwort auf European Commission

Careless deterministic automation has worstened bureaucracy and grew the distance between citizens and their public services.

Now, without any form of retrospection you're going one step further by deciding to ruin our environmenent to put everything in the hands of glorified statistical answering machines.

Should we attribute your actions to idiocy or malice?

Als Antwort auf European Commission

There's also exactly ZERO reason for Turkey (an unreliable ally and a semi dictatorship) or Israel (a fascist ethnostate with a lot of "interesting" companies that work in spying and subversion — that toolkit with the winged horse for a name comes to mind) to be in this. Neither of them are European, neither of them are EU, neither of them align with European Values.

Oh and Serbia. Also yikes.

"human-centric AI" does not compute.

Sounds like an oxymoron to me.

And also, as others have already noted: what the heck is an AI factory? With antennas?

Als Antwort auf European Commission

> AI Factories leverage the supercomputing capacity of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking to develop trustworthy cutting-edge _generative AI models_.

Emphasis mine.

What a way to say “we are gonna burn your resources”. I cannot even attribute this to incompetence anymore, it’s pure malice on your part at this point.

Als Antwort auf European Commission

maybe we should focus in digital sovereignty instead of building AI factories that doesn't work as expected. I mean, every single study about AI is telling us it doesn't work.

No, that's what we would get if you'd invest there instead. 🤦

Looks to me as if you copied & pasted this straight out of the propaganda pamphlets of the AI tech bros who are determined to strip us off our freedom, rights and money, further fueling the climate crisis while they are at it.

Shame- and reckless.

The only human-centric AI available is self-hosted, open source, finetuned and is usually lower than 40b parameters.
You should invest in secure, private and efficient automation tools and stop relying on centralized LLM services for everything.
Get your shit together.
Every industry being forced to swallow gen AI is crumbling due to it's hallucinations, lack of competent human supervision, and much needed pros fired in favor of AI agents that complete less than 61% of their tasks.

What a disaster. LLM data centres will kill the planet with their environmental cost with energy and water use and component high turnover.

You all laughed at the UK when they voted for Brexit (rightly so) but this investment in the LLM craze is batshit crazy. You are going to bankrupt EU countries when people realise LLMs are very expensive and do a terrible job at what computer illiterate people like your ministers are tasking them to do. There is going to be an AI bubble!!!
