Starting today, USB-C is the mandatory charging standard for all laptops sold in the EU.

We are putting an end to cable clutter and unnecessary costs for citizens.

One cable, any brand, less electronic waste.

We are delivering a simpler, more sustainable digital future for Europe.

USB-C on both ends, right?

What does a cable has to do wit Open Source Software ?
Could you please explain your "digital future" trashtalk?

I'd be interested in that vertical adapter thingy in the middle that connects the tangle with the green cable. What's it called, and what is its purpose?
Als Antwort auf European Commission

How to tell the difference between charging cables and data transfer cables?
Als Antwort auf European Commission

Great, now what about quickly deploying open source in EU as an european standard ?
Linux and open source software; free and open source. And no AI slop and data centers you have to hide consumptions in EU...

Actually, not quite. I still have devices that use micro and mini USB, and there are plenty of devices that require USB-A to USB-C cables for charging. On top of that, devices need different power adapters—5W, 15W, 20W, 35W, or even more. And cables don’t last forever. So, what’s the real advantage?
Als Antwort auf European Commission

Nice image, it's a shame my cables can still get tangled because I will still have more devices that need charging simultaneously.
Als Antwort auf European Commission

It might make sense for phone and small gadgets. USB-C is a disaster for larger tablets, tools and laptops for charging and knowing what functions are supported.

Makers use it as an excuse to have only one or two USB ports (a C and A) on the laptop and one on tablet. A bag of dongles & USB hub. Often unable to charge and use external USB-3 drive or screen.

Good intentions. Stupid implementation, partly because USB-C is a mess..

Als Antwort auf European Commission

so is magsafe banned? I hope it is, that port is a waste of space on these soda can paper weight laptops

I see from your diagram that you have also defeated entropy. Does this mean that my USB-C cables are in danger of slipping back through time unexpectedly?

it’s all fun and games until a newer protocol happens and the speed of government does its thing.
Als Antwort auf European Commission

great step forward, but it's also important to consider that the USB-C standard is a hot mess of many incompatible use-cases and with most cables not labeled at all.

The best about this all is, that this implies the madatory introduction of USB PD 3.1 with supply of up to 48V and up to 5A which means 240W.
So also for powerful CAD and Gaming Laptops.

Great!

are the cables all the same power rating? If not, are they CE marked with their power rating?
Als Antwort auf European Commission

yeah fuck that shit. Thanks for creating tons more e-waste; I love having to throw out all my perfectly fine pre-existing cables and buy new ones for any new device I buy, not to mention the ton of A-to-C adapters I've been forced to accumulate.

Great idea! No notes! I love your vision of "less waste by creating more waste"! Perfect use of my taxes!

Als Antwort auf European Commission

It's not one cable. It's a mess of many incompatible cables that now all look the same.
Als Antwort auf European Commission

good intentions, but .. now we have incompatible:

* SuperVOOC
* Quick Charge
* Adaptive Fast Charging
* SuperCharge
* HyperCharge
* Dart Charge
* Programmable Power Supply
* Power Delivery

in different versions with different power levels. And it's not just the power supply unit. Most times you need a special wire.

Good luck finding a replacement-unit, if your adapter is gone. That is just not simple.

Als Antwort auf European Commission

Yeah, I don't actually support this action. USB-C is a mechanically fragile connector for something like a laptop. My Lenovo X395 had to undergo board level rework twice during my trip in Europe this last year to solder on new connectors, which had failed under very light and in my opinion reasonable usage. Very few laptops make these parts easy to replace, which means standardizing around USB-C for laptops means a lot of these machines being turned into E-waste.
Als Antwort auf European Commission

does the new rules account for eventual replacement of USB-C, in such a way that e.g. USB4 alone can be used?
Als Antwort auf European Commission

As a hardware designer and occasional repairman I would much have preferred a few colour & size coded simple barrel jacks and not a needlessly complex clutterfk that costs more to make and probably comes with a bunch of risks like cable incompatibility, potential for malicious payloads when charging in the wild, and of course the increased difficulty of repair.
Als Antwort auf European Commission

How does producing different type of cable decrease waste?

Yeah, if you have USB-C then you do not need a new one.

Not to mention the different types of USB-C cables.

So the only way to reduce e-waste in cable production is to not include cables with the purchased devices.

Yes, it is more convenient for me to need just one cable, but I'd say that the Microslops artificial Windows 11 requirements produced much more e-waste than the cables in span of multiple years.

Als Antwort auf European Commission

Actually what is that picture there?

Why is there a Jack??!?!

Ok, guys, I won't judge. But can the person using Jack to charge their laptop confess?

Als Antwort auf European Commission

How does making sure micro-usb and mini-usb cables will become increasingly harder to obtain — as that is what mandating usb-c does — reduce electronic waste?
I'd say it rather *increases* e-waste, as older devices will become harder to use now?

@EUCommission despite all USB-C inconsistency shit I love this being a thing. But I can't help but wonder which laptops where charging with USB-A and (1 channel?) AUX in that before picture :blobfoxthinking:.

@Cambion I love Mastodon for this being right there in the replies =)
I believe they are reusing a picture from some other message which might have talked about more than charging. At least the image seems familiar.
Als Antwort auf Rihards Olups

@richlv yeah I figured it's either re-used, or a stock- or generated photo someone didn't think much about before using. I know it's not that deep, but it did make me laugh 😁.
Als Antwort auf Cambionn

@Cambion Weirdly enough, people mentioned in this thread that there might have been some devices who did use that for charging =)

@richlv I'm both amazed, flabbergasted, and dissapointed. Who thought combining audio and charging was a good idea? It's interesting for sure, but I can see why this didn't make it big 🤭.

I kinda love this as much as I hate this. It's so stupid it's funny. And I love finding this stuff out thanks to this post.

But I guess whoever made this picture did do his research after all. Gotta give him that. And my wonders have been answered 🤣🤣🤣.

Despite all the criticism in the comments, I believe this to be a good first step. I already saw improvements in my daily life thanks to this regulation.
